Fellowship Opportunities
The Livermore Lab Foundation (LLF) is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and inspiring the next generation of scientists and engineers. In partnership with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), LLF supports undergraduate fellowships for students seeking to advance their educational and professional STEM goals. Fellowship Opportunities (in-person, remote, and hybrid) are as follows. When applying, please specify your preference in your letter of interest.
- UC Merced Fellow
- A paid, one-year fellowship for a rising senior. Student completes a full-time, 12-week summer internship with LLNL’s Computing Directorate, Student continues as a part-time intern (approx. 5 hrs/week), consulting regularly with Lab mentors on research, academic guidance, and professional interests. Depending on student interests and available projects, fellow may be placed in other Lab divisions.
- Carbon/Climate Science Initiative
- a paid, full-time 10–12 week internship for summer 2023 with LLNL’s Carbon Initiative/Energy Program, with projects designed to help achieve net neutrality by 2045.
- Life Sciences
- a paid, full-time 10–12 week internship with LLNL’s Bioscience and Biotechnology Division, focused on applying live cell imaging, data science, and computational modeling to study molecular and cellular mechanisms leading to human disease.
- John S. Foster Jr. Undergraduate Fellow
- a paid, full-time 10–12 week internship in LLNL's national security program working on nuclear physics, radiation transport, hydrodynamics, astrophysics, plasma dynamics, numerical methods or computer science.
- LLF - Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) Undergraduate Fellow
- a paid, full-time 10–12 week internship with LLNL in which students advance their applied mathematics skills in a world-class research facility addressing some of society's greatest challenges.
Selection Criteria
- Candidates should be rising juniors or seniors for the 2023-2024 academic year
- Candidates must be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher.
- Candidates with demonstrated financial need may recieve special consideration (i.e., LLF funds enable them to devote more time to studies vs. paid work commitments)
Application Process
- Submit a one-page statement of interest, a resume and a letter of recommendation from a UC Merced faculty member to fellowships@livermorelabfoundation.org
- Applications must be received by February 15, 2023
- Fellowships are anticipated to be awarded mid-to-late March
