Making connections between students and alumni

The Alumni Advisors program is designed to connect members of our UC Merced Alumni Association to selected members of our Student Alumni Association.

Alumni Advisors commit to meeting with their selected student a minimum of three times during the semester-long program. The Office of Alumni Relations will coordinate three group activities, but it's also fine for the associate to meet with his/her student individually.

At each meeting, a career-related topic will be discussed. This could be a resume or cover letter review, a lesson how to search for jobs you want, goal setting, appropriate office attire and behavior, etc.

Matching Criteria

Alumni Advisors will be matched with students based on several criteria including location, major, career field, student activities, etc. Our first priority is to ensure that this is a rewarding experience for both the associate and the student.

The Student Alumni Association Leadership will review all alumni and student registrations to the program and determine whether an optimal match is possible. Not all alumni or students will be matched each semester.

Alumni who register for the Alumni Advisors program will be pre-screened by staff in the Alumni Relations Office. If selected for the program, each Alumni Advisor is expected to commit to meeting with his/her student three times during the semester and focus on sharing their insights, advice and potential further contact for students' professional development. Each meeting should be conducted in a professional manner. Any inappropriate behavior reported will be promptly addressed, and offending parties will be removed.
