Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC)
Faculty-mentored research is an integral component of undergraduate education at the University of California, Merced. Undergraduate research experiences provide numerous benefits to students, regardless of their future career choices. Students who have the opportunity to engage in research or creative projects develop skills in critical analysis, problem-solving, communication, and skills in understanding and applying research methods. It has been shown that engaging students, particularly first-generation and underrepresented groups, in undergraduate research both increases degree completion rates and participants are more likely to see faculty and graduate student instructors as positive influences who are invested in their academic success.
Internships
An internship is a short-term work opportunity provided by companies to students or recent graduates, allowing them to gain hands-on experience in a particular industry or field. Typically ranging from a few weeks to several months, internships offer a chance to apply academic knowledge to real-world situations, leaarn industry-specific skills, and understand workplace dynamics. Interns often work alongside professionals, gaining insights, mentorship, and practical training which can be invaluable for future career endeavors. Internships serve as a bridge between academic learning and professional practice, providing a glimpse into a potential career path while offering a platform to develop essential skills and build a professional network.
